This collection consists chiefly of letters John L. Brewster sent to his wife, Martha, from an army hospital near Washington, D.C. while he was convalescing from wounds received in battle during the Civil War. Also includes a pocket size account memorandum book of his personal finances; a letter of condolence written by a nurse at the army hospital; two letters of Dyer Brewster sent to Martha Brewster, regarding personal and family matters.

John L. Brewster was born ca. the son of Dyer Brewster of Cornwall, New York. Later he removed to Jamestown, New York, where he enlisted for military service in August 1862. He served as a private in Company C, 9th New York Cavalry Regiment. He was wounded in action and later died of infection in April 1863. From the description of Letters, 1862-1864.
